31st July 1948: The preview

31 Sat. Rather warm, becoming sunnier as the day wore on: a cooling breeze. The three children called at intervals. Gwennie came to show me her bicycle she will have when her birthday comes next month. It has been put back into the garage again after this preview. Wrote and posted letter to Chas. Staden. Saw some good batting by Merton II, Some local shopping. Walk along the rail path in evening: I liked the loco. “Cudworth”. In evening a large lorry packed up with thousands of empty milk bottles had its load overturn by taking the corner at Merton Way too quickly The road was littered with great quantities of broken bottles which were busily swept up by a crowd of people from the neighbouring flats.
