4th June 1948: "Dame Edith Helen has been badly nipped..."

4 Fri. Not quite so cold as yesterday but still dull and cloudy; a few light showers, no sun but less wind. Did the usual week-end shopping locally but to Morden to buy cats meat. Sowed another lot of cucumber seeds the previous three sowings have all failed as the result of cold weather and a few late frosts. The rose Dame Edith Helen has been badly nipped and looks like dying. The few roses that have bloomed are all very poor and will not open and the blossoms are of poor colour. They promised so well earlier but the warm weather brought them on too soon and now they are in bad shape.
