Saturday 17th May 1941: pilchards & gegenschein

Morning frost but mild, sunny day. The wind is veering from many quarters and every barrage balloon appears to be facing a different direction to the others. Trotting about trying to buy food; bought some pilchards at 1/6 a pound in Wimbledon. Did a lot of gardening. The sky being unusually clear and there being no moon the Zodiacal Light and Gegenschein were clearly visible after dark.

1/6 = one shilling and sixpence;
genenshein is faint brightening of night sky opposite the sun - see
