Friday 16th May 1941: frost, mint & bombers

Severe hoar frost, like a snow storm; cool day but getting milder and the wind is veering west, so perhaps the winter is nearly finished. In morning to buy a piece of meat. To Wimbledon in afternoon to do some shopping. Bought mint roots and planted in evening. Two bombers beat the sirens during the early hours; warning from 3.30 to 4.17 a.m. Night raid at 11.50 p.m. Many machines but raid was not local. The guns at the camp fired off a few rounds at the raiders. All clear at 4.0 a.m. also at 4.30 a.m. on 17 Sat.
