Warm, grand day with a lot of warm sun but a freshening breeze. Bought a new inner tube for my bicycle, also a tin each of black enamel and silver paint at Whitbourne's. Fitted new inner tube and took machine down with a view to re-enamelling it: did the mudgards - look very well. Watered Dear Mother's grave; getting very dry. Posted letter to Harold Conrade. Watered the garden.

On this day:
- Hitler ordered the invasion of Britain, in Operation Sealion.
- RAF dropped first 2,000lb bomb, at Keil, on battleship Sharnhorst. Another source records a one-ton bomb, the largest of the war, so far, failing to be dropped by a Hampden bomber in the military area and eventually being dropped in a non-military area. The reports do not necessarily conflict - but suggest the lack here at least of a clear account.
